Danzan-Ryu Jujitsu

Good health and positive attitude through martial arts training

What is Jujitsu?

Jujitsu is a system of unarmed self-defense that was practiced by the warrior class of Japan as an auxiliary art to the bow, spear, and sword. It was later practiced by commoners who were by law forbidden to carry arms. Its earliest forms were crude but effective throws, chokes, joint-locks and kicks & punches to vital points of the body.

Please see the What Is Danzan-Ryu Jujitsu? page more more information about Danzan-Ryu and the arts we study.

Mission

To teach Danzan-Ryu jujitsu to those people who wish to use martial arts training to develop good health and a positive approach to life.

Jujitsu is really fun to do and when we teach, we get more people to work out with!

What Does Kodai No Bushido Mean?

Kodai No Bushido is a Japanese name that means ancient warrior's path or the way of the ancient warrior.

The twofold meaning of the name is important. Jujitsu is a very old martial art form, dating back to 8th century Japan. By studying Danzan-Ryu jujitsu, one is practicing the same or similar techniques as those used by the samurai - thus walking in the path of the ancients. Bushido is a code of honor much like the code of honor of the European knights. The "way of the ancient warrior" is to strive to follow the mental and physical training that makes one a better person.

In addition, the name means that one does not have to be young to study Danzan-Ryu jujitsu, in fact, those who have overcome the ego and foolishness of youth are often better martial artists than those who rely solely on their youth and strength. And it doesn't hurt that the school heads are over 40.

It is said that it takes 10 years to gain control over oneself and another 10 to gain control over others.

Getting Started

We suggest that you start by visiting our school and observing a class. Adult Jujitsu classes are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights as well as early Saturday mornings. Our complete schedule includes classes for children and self-defense for women. See the Kodai No Bushido Curriculum for pointers to descriptions of the courses offered at the dojo.

New students begin in either one of these classes:

This will give you an idea of the instructional format, school etiquette, physical challenges of training and the quality of people with which you will be working.

It is best to wear loose fitting clothing at your first class because we will try to teach you a little of Jujitsu's unique charm. A T-shirt & sweat pants would be fine. (A judo gi is not required until you start the Adult Jujitsu classes.)

Before stepping on the mat all students must join the dojo, fill out and sign a release of liability form.
