Your Gi
Danzan Ryu Jujitsu Gi
In the Danzan Ryu classes the students (kyu ranks)
wear a white or natural (unbleached) cotton Judo/Jujitsu gi
with white socks.
These gis come in single and double weight, your choice.
Instructors may wear either white, black or both colors.
Genbukan Ninpo Bugei & Kokusai Jujutsu Renmei Gi
Both the Genbukan Ninpo Bugei and Kokusai Jujutsu Renmei classes
use a black gi with matching tabi (cloth boots).
Gi Care
A gi will last a few years when treated with respect.
Following these suggestions will help you maintain your
equipment in first class order.
- Hang dry your gi after every use.
- Do NOT leave a wet/sweaty gi balled up in your gi bag.
- Turn the gi inside out during wash.
- Wash your gi in warm or hot water unless it is a Black
colored uniform then use warm water instead.
- Do not use bleach or detergent with bleach.
- Wash gi BEFORE it starts to smell.
- Prof. Musselman also recommends starching and ironing the gi after each wash.
New Gi Preparation Procedure
A new cotton gi will shrink when it gets wet.
Expect from 10 - 20% srinkage along the sleeve length.
The degree of shrinkage varies between brands
(unique weave, cotton density, gi design)
but
this procedure will quickly reduce your new gi
to its natural state.
Maximum shrinkage will occur if you use a dryer.
Usually you must shrink the gi at least twice
before it reaches its final size.
Once the gi has been shrunk you may hem the pants and/or
sleeves and sew on any patches.
Do not wash the obi (belt), ever.
Professor Musselman's
New Gi preparation procedure:
- Soak in cold water for 2 hours
- Wash hot, lots of soap, ¼ cup (white gi only) bleach
- Dry in clothes dryer until the lapel at the thickest part is hot
- Wash cold, soap, no bleach
- Dry as in 3
This should shrink the gi to roughly wherever it's going to get to.
Prof. Musselman recomments that you never bleach you gi after this process.
Prof also recommends starching and ironing the gi after each wash to
improve the lifespan.
