Jaya R. Carl

Jaya R. Carl Sensei Carl started Danzan-Ryu Jujitsu in 1986 with Matt and Nancy Bigham. He received his Shodan in 1990, Nidan in 1994 and Sandan in 1997 from the American Judo & Jujitsu Federation (AJJF). He is currently continuing his studies under Professor Robert Hudson, Shichidan.

The Shanti Jujitsu Dojo in San Jose California was established by Jaya in February 2000. An aspiration of incorporating Jujitsu, yoga, massage, community and lifestyle crystalized when a dear friend found the building for the dojo.

Jaya was awarded a Kaidensho with the title of Renshi, 2003. This is a full license to teach, stating he has mastered Danzan Ryu and authorizing him to teach the entire system of Danzan Ryu.

In 1997 he was elected to the AJJF Board of Managers to serve as the National Manger of Communications. He has been an active member of the American Judo & Jujitsu Federation since 1987.

From his very first Jujitsu class in 1986 the Restoration Therapy techniques have been an important part of Jaya's practice. In 1991 he received his Massage Technician certificate then his Massage Practitioner certificate in 1999. He received a certificate in Seifukujitsu/Restoration Therapy from Profs. Tony Janovich and Sig Kufferath in 1997. Currently Jaya is studying advanced Seifukujitsu techniques with Prof. Janovich at the Kodenkan Jujitsu & Restoration Therapy School of Santa Clara California and with the Seifukujitsu Institute of Southern California under Prof. Robert Hudson. Jaya practices out of the Shanti Restoration Therapy clinic and does house calls throughout the bay area.

Jaya's Jujitsu is grounded in a many years of yoga practice. He completed the Yoga Teachers Training with Swami Vishnu Devananda of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers International in 1973. For five years Jaya lived and worked in the Sivananda Yoga Centers and Retreats where he taught hatha yoga, meditation and vedanta philosophy. His background in hatha yoga, pranayama and Seifukujitsu lead to the incorporation of Qigong and Exercises For Health into the dojo curriculum (1997) at Kodai No Bushido. Jaya met Sifu Fong Ha in 2002 and has been practicing Ch'i Kung (Qigong), I-Ch'uan, and T'ai-Chi Ch'uan with him up in Berkeley ever since.

To balance the martial arts in 1995 Jaya started to study Ikebana with Riji Kika Shibata. He currently holds the rank of Ikkyu from the Sogetsu School.

Greg Pitz

Greg Pitz Greg started his yoga studies with Ramanand Patel in 1991, with whom he studied for ~8 years. He then studied with the Mehtas, in London, for almost a year after that. The Mehtas are the authors of many books, two of which being Yoga The Iyengar Way & How To Use Yoga. Ramanand as well as the Mehtas are some of the most advanced Iyengar instructors in the world.

While in London, Greg also started exploring Siddha Yoga. Being a world-wide organization, he continues his studies in the San Francisco Bay area. Though he primarily chants with them, it has most certainly broadened his yogic background.

Around 1999 Greg started studying with Richard Miller, continuing when he can. Richard is also quite an accomplished psychologist as well, having published many papers, books, & tapes. It has primarily been through Richard that Greg's conscious spiritual awakening was started, and continues. Richard's dualistic thoughts have profoundly shaped Greg's life. Richard is the primary reason Greg decided to finally become a teacher.

In 2001, Greg started studying with Desikachar & Kausthub, which has been his primary emphasis since. Though there isn't a name for the style of yoga they teach, most call it "Viniyoga" as a reference. Desikachar is the son of Krishnamacharya, and Kaustub is Desikachar's son. Krishnamacharya taught Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, and Indra Devi, amongst others. This style strongly emphasizes breathing.

Locally, Greg has studied extensively with Joyce Anue, Larry Hatlett, Julianne Rice, Kent Bond, and Elise Miller, and has completed Joyce's teacher training.

Greg did his student teaching practicum in 2001 at Willow Glen Yoga with Kent Bond, then started here at Shanti Yoga Center, where he has been teaching ever since. He has also taught at Linda Evan's Fitness Studio for almost a year, 2002-2003, and also presently teaches yoga at San Jose State University.

Jeanna Lurie

Jeanna Lurie, phtography by Clay Clifford
Photography by Clay Clifford.
Jeanna Lurie discovered her calling to empower women in the childbearing year when she was pregnant with her daughter, born in 2001. A self-proclaimed "book worm," she devoured everything she could on the subject of pregnancy, birth, and motherhood to ensure her own empowering birth experience. She felt a need to share this information with other mothers-to-be.

In October 2002, Jeanna became an accredited La Leche League Leader, supporting women to breastfeed. Shortly thereafter, she continued her studies in birth, and earned her certificate as a childbirth educator from the Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators (ALACE) in the spring of 2004. She attended her first birth as a doula in February 2003 and received her Labor Assistant Certificate from ALACE in May 2004. To date, she has attended eight births. With yoga a regular part of her daily life, it made sense to add pre-natal yoga instructor to her credentials and was certified as a Whole Birth™ Yoga instructor in March 2004. The following June, she attended the Midwifery Level I workshop at the Farm in Summertown, TN. With such a passion for birth issues, Jeanna has eagerly attended workshops with Elizabeth Noble (Essential Exercises for the Childbearing Year, Having Twins and More), Henci Goer (The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth, Obstetric Myths vs. Research Realities), and Ina May Gaskin (Spiritual Midwifery, Ina May's Guide to Childbirth), as well as attending La Leche League Conferences and Leader Workshops.

Jeanna is also the Project Coordinator and founding member of the Alliance for Safe Childbirth (ASC), a grassroots community organization devoted to providing information, education, and advocacy for evidence-based maternity care through the Mother Friendly Childbirth Initiative, written by the Coalition to Improve Maternity Services. ASC strives to educate women in the South Bay about their maternity care options through events like the panel discussions presented at Tiny Tots Togs in January and April of 2004. She is an active member of Bay Area Birth Information, a non-profit also devoted to informing women about their choices in maternity care.
