What is Yoga?

In Hatha yoga one uses the body, breath and mind to find the true self. Yoga promotes a steadiness of mind, freedom from physical disability and control over mental distractions. The five basic principles are the essence of a complete hatha yoga practice.

See also the Hatha Yoga Frequently Asked Questions page.

Five Basic Principles

  1. Proper Breathing
  2. Proper Diet
  3. Proper Exercise
  4. Proper Relaxation
  5. Positive Thinking & Meditation
Hatha Yoga also known as asana or yoga postures is one of 8 stages of Raja Yoga. Yoga asana practice is intended to promote perfect health of the physical body. Some of the other stages of Raja Yoga include morals, ethics, breath control, and meditation.
Health is Wealth. Peace of Mind is Happiness. Yoga Shows the Way.
- Swami Vishnu-devananda
Some of our instructors are trained in the Iyengar yoga tradition. There is a sequencing of the poses, timing (length of time in the poses as well as when they are performed) and technical intricacies (the details and use of props). Iyengar yoga is for everyone. The props and the attention to details of body position are used to prevent injuries as well as help those with existing ailments.
At every level Asana has something to offer.
- Prashant Iyengar

What is Qigong?

Qigong (Ch'i Kong) is an internal art in which one learns to sense the Qi moving in ones own body. Advanced practitioners are able to move the Qi in their body at will. Basically, Qigong is a quiet meditative activity with profound physical, mental and spiritual side effects.

Qigong is a great form of exercise, especially for those with osteoarthritis. It can help you build your leg muscles, strengthen your posture, and improve your balance, flexibility, and mobility. It also can teach you to relax and focus, even while executing the moves, and is a way to harmonize the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. In addition, it helps to develop concentration and coordination, and can reduce the risk of falls common with the elderly.

Classes

The Saturday Hatha Yoga classes are 1.25 hours in duration and may run long. The Tuesday evening classes are 1.25 hours exactly. Please wear comfortable clothing and refrain from eating before class. Props and equipment are provided but you may want to bring your towel (never go anywhere without your towel, Don't Panic :).

In some classes the range of safe body positions is expanded by the use of props. The yoga center has block, blankets, straps, eye bags, staffs, and sticky mats for the students to use during class. There are also wall ropes and an inversion swing in the warm-up room.

Private and semi-private classes may also be scheduled.
